Lorem Ipsum Generator: Free Placeholder Text

The famous opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet", is a clipped piece of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC): the original phrase is "dolorem ipsum", meaning "pain itself", with the first two letters cut off. This tool keeps that opening when you leave the "Start with Lorem ipsum" box ticked, then builds the rest by picking words at random from a fixed list of Latin words drawn from the same source.

The words are picked at random, so the result is not valid Latin. The text stays the same while you switch options such as the HTML tags, and the Regenerate button produces a new version with the same settings. A paragraph averages roughly 40 to 45 words, which is a useful number when you are estimating how many to generate. You can copy the result or download it as a .txt file.

The HTML option

"Add HTML tags" wraps each paragraph in a <p> element, ready to paste into a template or CMS code view. In sentence and word mode the whole block is wrapped in a single <p>. Paragraph mode looks like this:

The tool outputs paragraphs, sentences and words only. For headings or list items, generate a few words or short sentences and place them in your own <h2> or <li> tags.

Filler that is much longer or shorter than the real copy hides layout problems. These are typical lengths for common page elements; adjust them to your own content plan.

Test the extremes as well as the average. A card that looks balanced with 20 words may break with 45, and a German or Finnish translation can run noticeably longer than the English original. Paste the result into the word counter if you need to hit an exact character count.

On anything that gets published

Placeholder text must never reach a live site. Google can crawl and index a page that still contains it, visitors see an unfinished page, and a title tag or meta description left as filler can appear in search results exactly as written. Before launch, search your templates and database for "lorem" and check each title and description in the Google preview simulator.

When the content decides the design

In a content-first process, the real words come before the layout. Pricing tables, onboarding steps, error messages and form labels depend on their exact wording, and filler hides whether the design actually works. Use draft copy there, even rough draft copy.

In usability tests

People cannot complete a task on a page they cannot read. A test with Latin filler measures visual layout only, not whether users understand what to do.

In accessibility checks

Screen readers read lorem ipsum aloud as nonsense, and filler alt text or link text tells you nothing about whether the page makes sense without sight. Use meaningful text for those checks.

• Draft copy. A rough first version of the real text is the most useful placeholder, because it has the right length, tone and vocabulary.
• Existing content. For a redesign, pour the current site's text into the new layout. It exposes the real longest headline and the real shortest product name.
• Representative samples. For data-heavy screens, use realistic names, prices, dates and addresses, including awkwardly long ones.
• Plain-language filler. If stakeholders are distracted by Latin, readable generic sentences in the page language do the same job.
• Lorem ipsum. Still the right choice for pure typography work: font pairing, line length, spacing and early wireframes where meaning would only distract.

Once the real copy is in place, run it through the readability analyzer to see whether it is as easy to read as the layout suggests.
